How to prepare for the 2026 produce season

Produce season doesn’t begin with the first load of strawberries; it begins when your routing guide is finalized, your cold chain is dialed in, and your risk controls are in place because capacity tightens faster than anyone ever plans for.  

 Here’s what’s different heading into 2026: price pressure + compliance pressure + theft pressure. 

• Price pressure: USDA ERS reports fresh vegetable prices were 2.9% higher than August 2024 (and up 2.8% month-over-month from July to August 2025). That’s a reminder that volatility is still real—and it shows up as freight whiplash when supply swings.  
• Compliance pressure: FMCSA updated its English Language Proficiency (ELP) internal enforcement policy guidance (May 20, 2025). Whether you see it in inspections, onboarding, or claims, it’s one more variable that can squeeze usable capacity in peak weeks.  
• Theft pressure: CargoNet recorded 884 theft incidents in Q2 2025, a 13% increase vs. Q2 2024—and produce is a classic “easy resale / time-sensitive” target.  

Your 2026 playbook

Pre-build a peak-week routing guide  
Identify the 6–10 weeks that always run hot for your lanes and commodities. Pre-commit primary/secondary carriers, set temp requirements in writing, and pre-approve alternates before you’re desperate. 

Treat reefer as a requirement, not a suggestion  
Set expectations: pulp temp, continuous monitoring, seal discipline, and detention rules. The goal is fewer surprise rejections and fewer “we’ll make it work” moments that turn into claims. 

Tighten carrier identity checks during peak 
Peak season is when fraudsters thrive. Verify authority/identity, insurance dates, and “who is actually showing up” on-site, every time, not just at onboarding. 

Run a weekly “risk + capacity” huddle starting 30 days ahead 
One page: forecasted volumes, known market spikes, facilities constraints, and contingency lanes. If it’s not written down, it’s not a plan.
