NMFC Updates System to Density-Based Classification
The proposed changes will simplify this system by consolidating commodity listings, making it easier to identify NMFC numbers and freight classes.
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) recently approved NMFC Docket 2025-1, which is set to take effect on July 19, 2025. The changes introduced in this docket aim to transition the NMFC system toward a more density-based classification approach.
Why Are These Changes Being Made?
The current NMFC system is outdated and consists of a complex classification structure. Some NMFC numbers correspond to a single class, while others rely on a density-to-class table.
The proposed changes will simplify this system by consolidating commodity listings, making it easier to identify NMFC numbers and freight classes.
Less-than-truckload (LTL) freight that does not involve handling, stowability, or liability concerns will be categorized using a standardized 13-tier density-to-class table (see below).

Not all commodities will be affected by these changes. The DLX team is actively identifying the impacted commodities and will communicate any relevant updates to customers accordingly.
Why Is This Important? What Are the Benefits?
If you ship products classified based on density, these changes may impact you. Key benefits include:
- Simplification: Reducing the number of NMFC categories minimizes the risk of misclassification, streamlining the shipping process.
- Cost Efficiency: A more straightforward classification system enables more accurate pricing, allowing DLX to recommend the most cost-effective shipping options.
How to Prepare
- Enhance Data Accuracy: Provide precise dimensions, weight, and density to prevent misclassifications, reduce billing disputes, and improve cost predictability.
- Optimize Packaging: Increase shipment density by packing items efficiently. Using the smallest possible volume while maximizing weight helps lower classification levels, ultimately reducing shipping costs.
Our team is committed to keeping you informed and prepared as these changes take effect. If you have questions about how these updates may impact your shipments, please reach out to your dedicated account manager.
