What is LTL Freight?

LTL stands for ‘Less Than Truckload’ and is primarily used when a shipment is not large enough to be a full truckload. This usually is between 1 – 6 pallets ranging from 150 – 15,000 pounds.

With the shipment not taking up the entire trailer, free space is often shared with shipments from other shippers.

Many factors come into play when shipping LTL: Dimensions, NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) number of product(s), weight, and length of haul. Accurate information will lead to more accurate pricing.

Benefits of LTL

Sharing space on the trailer with other shippers also leads to lower costs. You don’t pay for the cost of the full trailer – you only pay for the space your freight occupies.

By shipping LTL, you have access to additional services, or accessorials, that the carrier offers, including liftgate, inside pick up/delivery and guaranteed delivery. Extra fees are often applied for utilizing these services.

Drawbacks of LTL

By sharing space on the truck, any delays happening before your pick up or delivery can cause a delay with your shipment.

While shipping LTL is safe, damages can still occur. Since the freight is loaded and unloaded multiple times throughout its journey, the risk of damage or loss is present.
